A feral cat is a cat who has either never had any contact with humans or contact with humans has diminished over time. They are fearful of people and survive on their own outdoors. A feral cat is not likely to ever become a lap cat or enjoy living indoors. However, if you catch them at an early age (under 9 weeks) they can be socialized and become sweet indoor pets. The best thing to do for truly feral cats is to spay/neuter them through a TNR program so they can live out their lives without reproducing.
Feral cats are the offspring of stray or abandoned pets that are not spayed or neutered. Female cats can become pregnant at five months of age and can give birth several times each year. Without early human contact, their kittens become feral and begin the cycle of breeding again.
